Borides

Borides play an important role in the process of steel hardening and show a good resistance to oxidation, an excellent resistance to corrosion and good thermal conductivity. They are often used as high-performance ceramics in applications like sputtering target for hard material coatings or cutting tools. Treibacher Industrie AG carefully produces Titanium diboride TiB2, Zirconium diboride ZrB2 and Chromium diboride CrB2.

Titanium diboride - Treibacher Industrie

Titanium diboride TiB2

Titanium diboride exhibits high strength, extreme hardness, good resistance to high temperatures, good electrical conductivity and excellent resistance to oxidation.

TiB2 is chemically stable against numerous molten metals.


Zirconium diboride ZrB2

In a similar way to titanium diboride, zirconium diboride, ZrB2, exhibits high electrical conductivity and good resistance to oxidation.

Chromium diboride CrB2

Chromium diborides are hard materials with excellent resistance to corrosion and good thermal conductivity.


Applications

Titanium diboride TiB2

TiB2 is used as a high-performance ceramic for the following applications:

  • Cathode material for aluminum smelting flux electrolysis
  • Sputtering target for hard material coatings
  • Evaporator boats
  • Crucibles for non-ferrous metals
  • Manufacture of cutting tools
  • Ballistic protection


Zirconium diboride ZrB2

ZrB2 is used as a high-performance ceramic in many applications including:

  • Cutting tools in combination with SiC
  • Corrosion protection for refractory metals
  • Neutron absorbers in nuclear plants
  • Crucibles for non-ferrous metals
  • Refractory applications


Chromium diboride CrB2


Lanthanum hexaboride LaB6

  • Cathode material for scanning electron microscopes
  • Modulation of infrared absorption in nano-scale form


Hafnium diboride HfB2

  • Ultrahightemperature ceramics


Tungsten boride and Ditungsten boride WB and W2B

  • High temperature applications, e.g. crucibles


Molybdenum boride MoB

  • Wear and corrosion protection
